I Am Worried About My Friend. I Think Her Relationship Is Abusive.
If you are worried about your friend and think her relationship is abusive, that feeling is worth listening to. Something has shifted. She is harder to reach. She seems different. Maybe she has cancelled plans one too many times, or you have seen the way she flinches slightly when he makes a comment, or you just have a feeling you cannot shake.
That feeling is worth listening to.
What you might be noticing
You do not need to have witnessed something dramatic to be concerned. Abuse is often invisible to everyone outside the relationship, sometimes including the person inside it. Signs that something may be wrong include:
- She has become more isolated and harder to reach
- She seems anxious or on edge in ways she did not used to be
- She makes excuses for his behaviour regularly
- She has stopped talking about him the way she used to
- Her confidence seems lower than it was
- She cancels plans, often at short notice, with apologetic explanations
What to say and what not to say
The instinct is to tell her directly that you are worried, that he is not good for her, that she needs to leave. That instinct comes from love but it can sometimes close the conversation rather than open it.
If she feels judged or like she has to defend him to you, she may pull away further. The most important thing you can do is stay. Keep reaching out. Keep showing up. Be someone she knows she can come back to without having to explain herself or justify her choices.
When she is ready to talk, listen more than you speak. And when the moment is right, you can let her know that information exists whenever she needs it.
If you believe she is in immediate danger
