My Friend’s Boyfriend Keeps Answering Her Phone and Saying She Is Not Available

Why is she not answering her phone

You rang your friend. He answered. He told you she was busy, or not available, or would call you back. She did not call you back. This has happened more than once.

You are not overthinking this. This is a red flag.

Why this matters

A partner answering someone else’s phone and deciding who they speak to is a form of control. It is not protective. It is not caring. It is him managing her access to the outside world, including to you.

Women in controlling relationships are often isolated gradually from their friends and family. It does not happen overnight. It happens through a hundred small moments like this one, moments that each seem minor but together add up to a woman who has no one left to call.

The fact that you noticed means you are still close enough to see it. That matters.

Signs that something may be wrong

You do not need to have witnessed something dramatic to be concerned. Controlling behaviour is often quiet and cumulative. Signs that something may be wrong include:

  • She has become more isolated and harder to reach
  • She seems anxious or on edge in ways she did not used to be
  • She makes excuses for his behaviour regularly
  • She has stopped talking about him the way she used to
  • Her confidence seems lower than it was
  • She cancels plans, often at short notice, with apologetic explanations
  • She is posting less on social media, or has stopped entirely
  • Her social media feels managed, like someone else is deciding what goes up
  • She seems to need his permission before she can agree to anything
  • She checks her phone constantly when she is with you, watching the time
  • She flinches slightly at certain topics or seems to edit herself mid-sentence

What you can do

Try to find moments to speak to her alone. Not to interrogate or pressure her, but just to let her know you are there and that she can talk to you about anything. If she defends him, do not argue. Just listen and stay.

Keep reaching out even when she does not respond. A message, a voice note, a funny thing you saw. Keep the thread going. You are keeping a door open that he is trying to close.

If you are seriously worried about her safety, trust your instincts. You do not need proof to be concerned and you do not need her permission to take it seriously. If you believe she is in immediate danger, call 999.

What not to say

It is natural to want to tell her directly that he is not good for her, that you are scared, that you cannot watch this. Those words come from love, but they can backfire. If she feels judged, or like she has to choose between you and him, she may pull away further. Right now he has more influence over that choice than you do.

Instead of telling her what to think, tell her what you see. “I miss you” lands differently to “I think he is controlling you.” You are not asking her to agree with you. You are keeping the relationship open so that when she is ready, she comes to you.

What happens if she is not ready

She may not leave soon. She may not leave for a long time. That is painful to accept when you can see what is happening. But her timeline is hers, and the most important thing you can do is stay in her life so that when she is ready, you are still there.

You cannot force someone to leave. What you can do is make sure she knows that when she does, she will not be doing it alone.

Looking after yourself

Being worried about someone you love is exhausting. It can feel helpless, particularly when she does not seem to see what you can see. You are allowed to find this hard. You are allowed to set limits on how much you carry, because you cannot pour from an empty cup and you cannot help her if you are running on nothing.

Talk to someone you trust. Do not carry this alone.
