Why Did He Move In So Fast?

Maybe it started with one night, then a toothbrush, then a bag of clothes. Before you’d really decided anything, he was living with you. If he moved in so fast it still feels a bit unreal, you’re not imagining that something felt off.

Moving in quickly isn’t always a warning sign. Some couples do it and it works. What matters is how it happened, and how things have felt since.

Why the speed matters

When someone moves in fast, it becomes much harder to step back if you start to have doubts. Your home, your routine and often your money are suddenly shared. For someone who wants control, that speed is useful, because by the time you notice the warning signs, untangling yourself feels enormous.

Questions worth asking yourself

  • Did you both decide, or did it just happen around you?
  • Did he move in before you’d met his friends or family, or seen where he lived?
  • Was his own living situation vague, temporary or about to end?
  • Did it feel like you couldn’t say no without an argument or him sulking?
  • Since he moved in, do you feel less able to see people, spend money or make decisions on your own?

If you answered yes to several of these, it doesn’t automatically mean he’s abusive. But it is worth paying attention to how he responds when you want space, say no, or spend time apart.

How this might make you feel

  • Like it all happened before you had a chance to think
  • Uneasy in your own home, but unsure why
  • Guilty for having doubts when he seems so keen on you
  • Worried that asking him to leave would cause a scene
  • Like your home doesn’t fully feel like yours any more
  • Unsure whether you’re overreacting

How this can show up in your relationship

  • He’s vague about where he lived before or why he had to leave
  • He doesn’t contribute much to rent, bills or food, or he takes over how the money is spent
  • He gets moody or cold when you want time alone or with friends
  • He talks about “our” home very quickly, even though it’s yours
  • He changes your routine, your space or who comes round
  • Plans for the future move faster than you’re comfortable with

If something doesn’t feel right

  • Notice whether things feel different when he’s not there.
  • Keep a private note of anything that worries you, with dates.
  • Find out whose name is on the tenancy or mortgage, so you know where you stand.
